MUJINTO Rock /Shonen Knife MV production
The creatures featured in this video are as follows. How many can you find?
starfish, crane, turtles, dolphin, Chinese eel, bats, dinosaurs (Triceratops, Ankylosaurus) owl, parakeet, snail, fish, frog, chameleon, butterflies
For the first assignment of January 2023, I was asked to create a stop-motion, time-lapse video for the music video MUJINTO Rock (approx. 4 min.), the first song on Shonen Knife's new album "Our Best Place".
I was delighted to accept the request from Shonen Knife, a long-time fan of the band, and I was happy to oblige.
The cast consisted of acorns from the Acorns, and Rocco Canvas was to take care of the scenario, direction, and all other aspects of the video.
However, as we began to formulate the concept, I realized the magnitude of our responsibility.
The music video was for the new Shonen Knife album, and I thought it needed to be an exciting video that would enhance the image of the first Shonen Knife album to be released in three years. And I wanted to do it in stop motion! That was my mission this time.
Well, first of all, what kind of desert island should I make? How will we get around on a deserted island with no conveniences? What kind of creatures will we encounter? While imagining the bizarre, I collected miniatures, painted, and set the background.
I would love to visit such a deserted island. I wonder what I would find in a cave. Mushrooms for shelter from the rain? I want to meet a chameleon!
I found myself becoming an acorn and playing around with the production process.
At first, I felt that 4 minutes of time-lapse photography was quite long. In fact, it is the longest among my time-lapse works. But as the adventure progressed, I wondered if I could have played with the dinosaurs and had a barbecue if it had been a little longer.
It took me about 12 days to make the film, and another week to edit it.
Compared to my first film, "Acorns in Wonderland," which took two months to make, I think the pace has quickened considerably.
It was very exciting and fun to go to a desert island with rolling acorns.
I bought a lot of shiitake mushrooms, shimeji mushrooms, and enoki mushrooms for the mushroom scene, but only the shiitake mushrooms were actually used. LOL!
MUJINTO Rock, now ,after completing the production of this video, I feel refreshed and exhilarated after returning from my adventures on the deserted island.
As the name suggests, Shonen Knife's album is "Our Best Place," a time to travel freely with a sweet breeze and bursts of Rock music.
Shonen Knife will be playing live in Europe from March to April! The 40th anniversary of the girls' band is a powerhouse, and we can only say "bravo!
While making this video, I was filled with vitamins from MUJINTO Rock's music, which cheered me up as well. I hope that the viewers of this video will be able to turn off their minds, relax, and enjoy the music.
The cast is the Acorns.
